Lance Green is a master colorist and an expressionist extaordinaire. His paintings burst with unheard of hues and bristle with primitive emotion. With a maturity in his work that only comes with decades of fearless exploration and a disciplined ability to paint by deep instinct, he works his magic in a state of total abandonment, beckoning the observer to experience them in a similar state. His work deals directly with his own personal experiences as well as those he observes in others, celebrating the joys and wrestling with the struggles of life. One particular reoccurring theme that is a constant impetus to Lance's work is his life partner Lisa's challenge with Multiple Sclerosis. This has led him to explore the healing power to be found in art.
His own shamanistic images come to power with tremors of intense, yet controlled energy that exudes the integrating soul of the artist, marrying both ancient and personal mythologies. Lance brings one into an encounter with the transcendent and beatific, as well as the the dark and the mysterious. Many are self portraits of a sort, yet all are universal in the deepest application, expressing the human paradox of grace and despair. There is a dark whimsy, an anxious optimism in the work that somehow speaks a secret language, bringing one to rest deeply in the conviction of an ultimate redemption in all things.

Lance was born in Denver, Colorado in 1953 and was raised there until age ten. For several years to come he moved all around the southwest with his mother and stepfather, living in the majestic high country of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the bayous of Lake Texarkana and the high deserts of New Mexico and Arizona where he was immersed in Native Art and Culture.
During the summers he would live with his father who was married to a Norwegian abstract painter, Chris Christopherson. Finally, he and his family settled in the East Los Angeles area where they remained throughout his high school years. It was there that he also developed a deep love for Latin Art and Culture. While attending high school, he met an art teacher, Linda Stevens, who took a particular interest in him and gave him the instruction and guidance needed to set his life course as an artist. He majored in art at Rio Hondo College in East L.A., and did workshops with Bob Peak and Ben Shahn. In the late 1990's and early 2000 he studied intensely in a one on one arrangement with the late contemporary Master Fritz Scholder.
His influences include the Bay Area Figurative Expressionists, especially Nathan Oliviera, Manuel Neir, Elmer Bischoff, and Richard Debenkom, the European Expressionists Jean Dubuffet, and E.L. Kirchner, the Mexican Masters Freida Kahlo, Laura Hernandez , Rufino Tamayo, and most recently the late Jean Basquiat. However, apart from influences, Lance is a Pioneer in the world of contemporary painting exploring worlds previously uncharted.
Lance now resides in the Black Forest of Colorado and paints in his lakeside studio at Tri Lakes Center for the Arts in Palmer Lake, Colorado.
He currently shows at Walden Fine Arts in Taos and Deloney Newkirk Gallery in Santa Fe New Mexico as well as the Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs Colorado.
